In surely the only pageant in which calling a contestant a heifer is considered a compliment, last weekend, the dairy industry in Shanyin County in the Chinese province of Shanxi held a contest. Only, the contestants were 200 cows, which were judged on the basis of “looks, milk and pedigree.” Critics had a, well, cow over the inclusion of eight (human) female models, who wore bikinis and masks while posing with the cattle. Said one editorial: “Beautiful girls have far greater ability to attract attention that the milk cow contestants. How do you think that makes the cows feel?”
