Expelled ANC Youth League President Julius Malema addressed disgruntled mine workers at Gold Fields Mine on September 11, 2012 in Carletonville.

Malema has demanded the resignation of National Union of Mineworkers general secretary Frans Baleni, saying he and his colleagues have failed striking miners.

He was also quoted in an interview with CNN journalist Christiane Amanpour saying, "[There] are strikes happening in different mines. They need to be co-ordinated and a national program should be rolled out wherein every month for a week, [five] working days, there will be strikes demanding better salaries for the workers, demanding that the mineral resources of this country be nationalised."
