A Pretoria nursery school teacher has been caught carrying 19 toddlers in her Renault Clio, Beeld reported on Friday.

All the children, from the Rietfontein nursery school, were aged between four and six, and were returning from a school outing to a local Spur on Thursday afternoon.

When the Tshwane metro police stopped teacher Melanie Minnie, 19 faces peered through the windows.

Minnie said she got the fright of her life when the police stopped her.

"It was the first and the last time that we'll go on an outing... we're actually a very cute school," she was quoted as saying.

A member of the public called the police when Minnie stopped in the parking area of the Jacaranda shopping centre, and several children spilled from the car.

The children were left at the Spur's play area, while Minnie returned to the school, about 1km away, to fetch a second group of tots. Minnie was fined R1,500.
