From 1969 to 2011, Muammar Gaddafi ruled Libya with a mix of uncompromising tyranny and outrageous bluster. He imprisoned those with whom he didn't agree and encouraged his citizens to spy on each other. Yet when it was expedient to do so, he wooed countries he'd previously loathed, and was more than happy to shake hands with the likes of Tony Blair and Barack Obama.

Saturday, 20 October marks the 1st anniversary of the death of Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi. From 1969 to 2011, Gaddafi ruled Libya with a mix of uncompromising tyranny and outrageous bluster. He imprisoned those with whom he didn't agree and encouraged his citizens to spy on each other. Yet when it was expedient to do so, he wooed countries he'd previously loathed, and was more than happy to shake hands with the likes of Tony Blair and Barack Obama. In this picture, Gaddafi, right, salutes as he appears with Gamal Abdel Nasser, the president of Egypt, on a visit to Suez shortly after seizing power in a military coup in Libya in 1969.

One year on from his demise, we look back at the images that defined the military and political career of one of the world's most infamous figures.
