ANC welcomes R105 minimum farm wage

The African National Congress on Tuesday welcomed the new minimum wage for farmworkers.

"This new government offer will surely go a long way in ensuring that we eradicate poverty in the farming community, as well as improve on their socio-economic conditions," ANC spokesman Jackson Mthembu said.

On Monday, Labour Minister Mildred Oliphant announced the new minimum wage for farm workers was R105 a day, 52 percent more than the previous minimum of R69 a day. The new rate would take effect from March 1.

The ANC was confident that agriculture and food security in the country would be secured through its land and agrarian reform policies.

He said the party was concerned about the level of violence seen during the recent strikes by farmworkers in the Western Cape.

"We... believe that through the involvement of all stakeholders, this challenge will be overcome."
