A Vredefort farmer was wounded in a struggle with two armed robbers on his farm, Free State police said on Wednesday.

Constable Peter Kareli said Andries Cox, 61, was at his stock pen on the farm Middelerf when he was threatened at gunpoint by two men at 3.30am on Wednesday.

Kareli said the armed men wanted money and firearms from the farmer.

At the house one of the men woke Cox's wife, Anna, and repeated their demands.

The police said the farmer told the men that what they were looking for was on the second floor of the house. On their way there a scuffle broke out between the farmer and the robbers. Cox was shot through the hand and a foot.

The men fled the scene with cash, jewellery and cellphones.

Kareli said Cox was taken to hospital and his wife, unharmed, was treated for shock.
