Jurgen Vandekeere surrounded by his family at the Delmas Magistrates Court where he appeared in connection with the murder of Chantelle Barnard who was raped and murdered on a smallholding in April 2011.

Jurgen Vandekeere, 33, the son of the smallholding's caretaker, allegedly raped 20-year-old Chantelle Barnard and slit her throat before bathing her body on April 4. She was last heard from on April 1, the same day she went to the smallholding to hand over the keys to the property her and her mother Suzette used to stay in.

Her mother went to the property and banged on the doors until Vandekeere opened for her. She apparently noticed bandages on his hands and a bite mark.

Beeld newspaper reported she saw a blanket lying in a pool of blood in the lounge. She ran through the house and found her daughter's body in one of the bedroooms. She told Beeld it appeared the body had been bathed.

"Chantelle was lying naked on the floor and I could only see the right side of her face. There was not even a drop of blood on her body, but her hair was wet and a container with make-up was next to her body."
