KwaZulu-Natal health to take over hospitals

More KwaZulu-Natal hospitals, previously funded by foreign donors, will be taken over by the provincial health department, The Mercury reported on Tuesday.

Provincial health MEC Sibongiseni Dhlomo revealed this in an interview with the paper on Tuesday.

Last week the health department announced it would take over the running of Durban's McCord Hospital. The hospital was set to close after its funds from an American donor dried up. The department was also looking at purchasing St Aiden's hospital in Durban.

According to The Mercury 12 other hospitals across the province would be absorbed by the public health sector, including St Mary's in Marianhill and St Mary's in Melmoth.

"These hospitals were funded by foreign sources, but now people are saying South Africa is a free country and we cannot keep funding their hospitals," Dhlomo was quoted as saying.
