Laptops for teachers Round 2

Government will again start rolling out laptops to teachers after its previous attempt stalled over funding.

"Implementation of the Teacher Laptop Initiative is back on track with more teachers enabled to access this resource," Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga said in her budget vote speech in Parliament yesterday.

She said work on the new funding model, procurement and administration processes to beef up the initiative was going well. She also alluded to a "very exciting announcement" that would be made later in the year.

Motshekga said the department had developed, together with the Department of Communications, a cost-effect connectivity plan for all schools, the first phase of which would be rolled out to 1650 schools.

She said in 2011, 2334 schools were connected to the Internet for teaching and learning purposes and 7008 utilised the Internet for administrative means.

The establishment of one ICT resource centre in each province was also expected to accelerate the training of teachers on how to use the technology, she added.
