Mandela 'doing fine and recovering': Ramaphosa

By Mariam Isa

Former President Nelson Mandela is doing fine and recovering in a warm and supportive environment in his home‚ deputy president of the African National Congress (ANC) Cyril Ramaphosa said on Thursday night.

Mandela‚ 94‚ spent nearly three weeks in hospital in December‚ where he was treated for a lung infection and gallstones. He was discharged on December 26‚ after his longest stay in hospital since leaving prison in 1990.

"He's got warm and supportive people around him and is gaining strength -- he recognises them‚ he talks‚ he engages‚ and that is wonderful‚" Ramaphosa told Johannesburg's Jewish community at an event hosted by Investec.

Ramaphosa was answering questions after delivering one of his first public speeches since he was elected at the ANC's conference in Mangaung in December.

Mandela's message to the country's leadership would be that they were "servants of the people" and should continue their good work‚ Ramaphosa added.

He said he would be seeing the former president soon.
