There was an appeal in the National Assembly on Tuesday for witnesses of the Daveyton police dragging a taxi driver with a vehicle to come forward.

Minister of State Security Siyabonga Cwele said the government viewed the matter in a serious light and would like to see stern action taken against those responsible.

He urged members of the public to help the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) with information.

"In particular, we appeal to those who have video footage that will assist in the prosecution... of this case," Cwele said.

Eight police officers -- two warrant officers and six constables -- have been implicated in the death of taxi driver Mido Macia, a Mozambique national, and now face a murder charge.

The officers allegedly tied 27-year-old Macia to the back of a police van and dragged him along a street in Daveyton last Tuesday.

A police officer found his body in the local police station's cells that evening. A post mortem revealed he had died of head and internal injuries.

His death sparked a national and international outcry.

The police implicated in his death appeared in court on Monday, amidst plenty of protest. The case against the policemen was postponed until Friday as no identity parade had been held yet. The men will apply for bail at their court appearance on the day.

Over the weekend, a wreath-laying ceremony was held in memory of Macia, which was attended by DA shadow police minister Diane Kohler-Barnard and friends and family of the Mozambican national.
